About (how we got here)

HI, I’m Archie, and this is my website. BAD MARIA MEDIA has been around in one form or another since the late 1980s, when I was a social activist, designing protest flyers with a pantograph and rub-on letters salvaged from a thrift store, or using shoe scuff liquid through stencils on thin, light paper to make banners. I had a lot more to say than could be expressed in slogans and began typing up and laying out zines, publishing them in three cities. I’ve written and directed plays, energized by the scrappy nature of independent community theatre. As soon as I discovered retro tech and public access television, I was recording video and audio of subjects I found interesting with salvaged and professional equipment. And that’s very much how I approach my projects and pursuits. If it’s interesting to me, I trust that it will be interesting to others. But whether it is or isn’t ultimately, I still do it. Many of my ideas have involved collaborating with creative people I respect and admire, and it has been and continues to be an energizing learning experience.
